The built-in siren is perfect for alerting you to a leak when you're home. And if you are not at home, the mydlink Wi-Fi Water Sensor will send push notifications to your iOS or Android device. The water detection sensor supplied with the DCH-S161 is designed specifically to detect water on contact. When water is detected, the sensor will trigger both an alarm siren and an alarm LED so you can both hear and see the warning. The sensor is at the end of a 1.8 m (5.9 ft) cable, allowing you to place the sensor anywhere that’s convenient.

This summer, we had a problem with our water heater leaking. If I hadn’t gone in there by chance, it would have eventually leaked much, much worse. We decided to place our mydlink Water Sensor in the laundry room and use the extension it comes with for more reach. The house is secure, appliances unplugged and now safe from water leaks! I installed it in my basement and tested it by placing a single drop of water directly on the sensor cable, at which point the alarm sounded and a push notification was sent to my phone.

Long-Range Sensors

Tapping the box wheel in the upper right corner brings you to the My Actions page, where you can create rules for the sensor. For instance, you can create a rule to have the sensor send you a push notification when water is detected, or have the Smart Plug turn on or off when water is detected. This comes in handy if you have a sump pump connected to the Smart Plug. You can also have the Wi-Fi Siren DCH-S220 sound when water is detected. When water is detected, the mydlink app sends push notifications to your mobile device no matter where you are.

Being alerted and stopping the leak before it gets to that point can save you TONS of money. The event was immediately listed in the Leak Detection list. Results were identical with a small puddle of water. I connected a small water pump to a Smart Plug which I also installed in the basement, and created an Action to have the pump turn on when water was detected. It also shows up on your mydlink Web-based console as an installed device, but you can't view water detection logs or create rules; to do that you have to use the mobile app. The app opens with the My Devices page that lists all of your installed D-Link devices. If they are active they are listed with bold black lettering and if they are inactive or no longer installed they will appear grayed out.

I've been out of town before and had someone check my house to find out we had a terrible leak. I can see how this could really come in handy for any home especially those living on the coast. I rent and would hate for something to happen to any of my items even though my landlord would be responsible for fixing the leak.
